Background

Located in the heart of London Bridge, The Hop Exchange is a landmark Grade II listed building with a rich history dating back to 1867. Originally constructed as a centre for the hop trading industry, the building once featured a distinctive Victorian gallery roof and served as an important commercial hub for traders across the region. Today, it remains one of only two surviving exchange buildings of its kind in London.

Over the years, the building has evolved to accommodate new uses while retaining its historic character and architectural significance. Situated close to Borough Market and the South Bank, The Hop Exchange continues to play an important role within the local urban landscape.

As part of ongoing refurbishment works, the project aims to carefully upgrade key elements of the building and respect its historic fabric. The replacement of the existing atrium rooflights forms an important part of these improvements, supporting improved daylighting and environmental performance within the space.

Project Brief

Next Generation Rooflights has been appointed by Ambit, working alongside the Resident Architects, to design, manufacture, and install two bespoke atrium rooflights to replace the existing dual-pitch units that have reached the end of their design life.

The new rooflights are being developed as self-supporting, multi-facetted barrel vault structures, designed to complement the building’s historic architecture and introduce a modern high-performance glazing solution. Together, the two rooflights will cover more than 300m², forming a prominent feature within the building’s central atrium.

The rooflight system is being designed to meet CWCT TN66 and CWCT TN67 Class 1 non-fragility requirements. It will incorporate a combination of clear and translucent double-glazed units to help manage solar gain, alongside opening vents to provide natural ventilation. Once installed, the new rooflights will support improved daylight and environmental performance while respecting the character of this historic London building.
