Darwin College enjoys an enviable location on the banks of the River Cam. Allies and Morrison were tasked with the John Bradfield Court refurbishment project. This was first such endeavour since the college was founded in 1964 – the Old Granary the main building at John Bradfield Court had been converted into student accommodation in the 1960s but as was the way at that time, consideration to the quality of its historic space was not forefront of mind.
Darwin College wanted John Bradfield Court to provide a focal point for College life as a flexible social and meeting space. The Grade II-listed Malting House was key feature and also a challenge with its tall, slate pitched roof.
Challenge Accepted
Addressing and overcoming challenges is what we do best at Next Generation Rooflights and the challenges of a tall, slate pitched roof was one we were happy to accept. For the John Bradfield Court project, we created bespoke vented glazing with thermally efficient glass that not only enhanced natural light but also significantly improved energy efficiency. The bespoke design incorporated seamless integration with the existing architecture, enhancing the building’s aesthetic.
Precision Execution
We worked with Messenger, the contractors on the project to ensure every aspect of the installation was executed with precision, from initial planning through to the final fit. This approach is a testament to our unwavering promise of delivering innovative, sustainable, and high-quality solutions for commercial projects’.
We believe the Old Malting House is another example where our creativity came to the fore as we designed and installed a truly bespoke glazing solution. The specific design requirements meant each piece of glazing was individually created to exact dimensions for this unique project. At Next Generation Rooflights, we understand that meticulous attention to detail and innovative design are paramount in delivering impeccable results.
Our client’s vision was central to our approach in the John Bradfield Court project, as trusted advisors, we ensured open lines of communication throughout the project’s duration, ensuring transparency and fostering a strong relationship with stakeholders. This collaborative ethos allowed us to navigate challenges effectively and keep alignment with the project’s aims.
Award Winning
The John Bradfield Court Project was nominated for and won the RIBA East Award in 2024 and is reminder to us at Next Generation Rooflights that our commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and sustainability, is worthwhile.
