Innovative use of Box Sliding Rooflights in High End Residential London refurbishment

We worked with Architects - Stiff + Trevillion Architects Ltd and their Contractors - Bond & Hunt Ltd to add four one off bespoke sliding box rooflights, to their refurbishment of an occupied 1960’s residential block. The structure was already twelve storeys and with the formation of a new roof level for four high-quality penthouse flats; care and expertise were needed to ensure that the ventilation, light, and roof access matched the high quality of the works carried out.

The Challenges

The installation had challenges unique to the ‘normal’ installation on a thirteenth floor. Logistical challenges combined with residents being in situ on other floors (85 apartments in total) meant great care was taken to reduce the impact on those living in the residential block. As a full crane lift was exceedingly difficult, we had complete final assembly of the sliding box rooflights including glazing them on site, normally we would have craned the pre-assembled rooflights to the thirteenth floor.

Unique Design and Customisation needed

As the sliding box rooflights were to be added to the newly created high-quality penthouse flats they had to be of the highest standard and complement the unique design of each penthouse flat. This meant we had to create left-hand and right-hand opening configurations, as well as manufactured them in a custom colour to complements the building's aesthetics.

Each sliding box rooflights was individually designed to fit the specific dimensions (2400mm wide x 3700mm span x 1100mm high) and fitted with a neutral solar control and laminated glass to conform with the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology Class 2 Non-Fragile requirements for safety and better energy efficiency.

The Outcome

With each of the generously sized triplex apartments our sliding box rooflights helped give a sense of space and light providing access to a large roof-top terrace with spectacular views overlooking Lords' Cricket Ground.
